Announcing - 'Parents for Charter Schools'
An organization linking charter school parents throughout Ohio
Parents will advocate with their 'voices and votes' as part of the newly created Parents for Charter Schools (PCS) -- a 501(c)(4) organization to empower parents with a specific focus on advocating and protecting Ohio public charter schools. PCS partners with the Ohio Coalition for Quality Education - a statewide leadership organization representing all of Ohio's public charter schools.
The PCS network organizes and trains charter school parents from across the state with the purpose of developing Charter Parent Ambassadors (CPA) in every school.
Parents for Charter Schools supports families by linking them with other parents to present a united and powerful 'voice' when working with state legislators, other policymakers and the media.
"There are more than 100,000 students being educated at charter schools across Ohio," said PCS Director Ron F. Adler. "Those parents are in the ideal position to know the individual needs of their children - and the best educational setting for them to feel safe and in which to flourish."
This parent-driven organization will offer families a 'voice' to: * protect their child's education; * defend their 'right to school choice'; * and, guard the future of their public charter school of choice.
"My husband and I searched for an online school to fit the immediate medical circumstances of our oldest daughter's needs," explained Lori Spangler, a Charter Parent Ambassador from Newark Digital Academy (NDA).  "NDA is a perfect fit for Sophie and we are grateful. Protecting her education is crucial to us - and Parents for Charter Schools helps put our family back in charge of Sophie's education."
PCS seeks to break down barriers that often exist around Ohio's public charter schools.  Advocating at the grassroots level and directly to legislators, parents will fight against legislation and other regulatory
changes that would hurt their charter school.

Welcome Fall!

We have been very busy here at The Edge Academy this past month. We would like to take this opportunity to “Welcome” all families to another exciting school year. We have been working hard during this first month at establishing routines and procedures.  Our school prides itself on leadership as we are practicing the 8 Habits.

I wanted to share some events that will you may wish to put on your calendar:

**First grading period ends on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.

** NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 21, 2016. This is a Professional Development Day for staff.

**Fall Conferences will be held on Wednesday, October 26th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Watch for more information from your child’s teacher. Our expectation is for teachers to have a face-to-face conference or a phone conference with each parent. Parent partnerships with their child’s teacher can help foster significant academic growth. Please stay informed on ProgressBook and Class Dojo and plan on attending conferences.

**All 4th and 5th graders are invited to a school dance on Friday, October 28, 2016.  It will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A flyer will be sent home with the classes soon.

**3rd grade Ohio ELA (Reading) Assessment will be given in early November. 3rd grade parents/guardians will be receiving more testing information in October.

Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook!!

University of Akron students once again show their support for our school. They collected a generous amount of gloves, mittens, hats and scarves for our students.

We appreciate our partnership with the college as many students complete their field experience hours within our classrooms. A BIG "Thank You" to the grad students who took the time and dedication to collect items for our students to use during the cold, winter months.

We have added a few more ways to stay up-to-date with what is going on in the school this year! Please take a moment to like our Facebook page for a variety of news, photos and articles! It's a great place to share our success stories of our school. Also, many of the teachers are now using Class Dojo, so if you aren't sure, please contact your students homeroom teacher! This is an AMAZING app that allows parents and teachers to contact each other fluidly throughout the day!

Thank you again for all of your support!

Edge Academy has a Dream Team we are so proud of.  The Dream Team consists of the students that display good behavior, come to school in dress code and have good attendance.  Every month they celebrate with a special activity and snack. In September the students who achieved Dream Team from the month of August had a dance party and made a leaf rubbing.  In October the students on Dream Team from September painted pumpkins and decorated a cookie with frosting and sprinkles.  In November, Dream Team students from October made their own trail mix and went to the park to play.

The students who were on Dream Team the entire first grading period received a big celebration.  They were treated to a special breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes, sausage, yogurt, juice and milk.  Then they went to the Holiday Tree Festival at the John S. Knight Center to see more than 200 decorated Christmas trees while children choirs and orchestras were playing and singing.  Lastly, this great group of 52 students from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade enjoyed cupcakes and juice.

This year in preparation for the 3rd grade guarantee test, all third grade students and their parents were invited to a meeting in October. Intense test prep packets were given to all students that attended and were offered incentives for working hard and completing the packets on time, as well as earning a passing score. Two of our third graders took on the challenge and made it their goal to qualify for the incentives offered. Congratulations Antony Jones and Jamar McCray! You have demonstrated the qualities of a leader in your academics.

Mrs. Baddeley's 3rd Grade Reading classes are using Chromebooks to help strengthen their reading, fluency, and comprehension! The program is called Read Theory and it is a free program for teachers to use with their students. The Chromebooks and this program are great assets to the students and the teachers. Let's get reading everyone!!
